Respectful care
Families should expect the person who has died to be treated with dignity, respect and appropriate care throughout the funeral director's involvement.
Professional standards and accountability
Our NAFD membership means that we have chosen to work within recognised professional standards designed to protect bereaved people and promote high-quality funeral care.
For families, this provides an additional level of reassurance: our work is not judged only by the promises we make ourselves, but against an external professional code.
Reassurance for families
The National Association of Funeral Directors promotes standards across the funeral profession and requires its members to follow the UK Funeral Director Code.
Families should expect the person who has died to be treated with dignity, respect and appropriate care throughout the funeral director's involvement.
Funeral choices, services, responsibilities and costs should be explained in a way that helps families make informed decisions.
Member firms are expected to act honestly, competently and sensitively when supporting bereaved people.
Concerns about an NAFD member can be considered through the Association's standards and complaints processes.
The UK Funeral Director Code
The NAFD's UK Funeral Director Code sets out requirements for member funeral directors. It covers the way firms conduct themselves, communicate with families, care for deceased people and deliver funeral services.
Membership therefore involves an ongoing responsibility to meet professional expectations. It is intended to give bereaved people greater confidence when choosing a funeral director.
We support the principle that families should be able to understand the standards a funeral director has agreed to meet and know where to turn if something goes wrong.

An association logo alone does not arrange a thoughtful funeral or support a family through bereavement. The value of professional standards is demonstrated through everyday actions.
For us, that means answering questions clearly, giving families time to consider their choices, providing written information about costs and treating every person in our care with dignity.
It also means being open when something needs explaining or correcting. Families should feel able to ask questions, raise a concern and receive a considered response.
We combine these professional responsibilities with the personal accountability of an independent, family-owned funeral service based in Heathfield.
Concerns and complaints
We would always ask you to speak with us first. Many concerns can be resolved quickly when we understand what has happened and what outcome you are seeking.
If a complaint cannot be resolved directly, eligible customers of NAFD member firms can access NAFD Resolve. This is a free, independent dispute resolution service funded by the NAFD, with conciliation and adjudication provided by qualified professionals from the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution.
Our full internal complaints procedure will explain how to contact us, how we respond and the options available if the matter remains unresolved.
Choosing a funeral director
Families should feel comfortable asking any funeral director about their standards, prices, facilities and how they will care for the person who has died.
Ask whether calls are answered locally and who will support you during the arrangements.
You are entitled to understand where the funeral director's care facilities are and who is responsible.
Ask for written estimates and clarification of which costs are the funeral director's and which are paid to third parties.
A reputable funeral director should explain its complaints procedure and any independent redress available.
Independent, family-owned and professionally accountable
We will explain your options clearly and without pressure.
